Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) In Teen Girls

Being a teen girl can be pretty challenging. During these years, teens go through lots of changes—socially, academically, and especially with hormonal mood swings. It's perfectly normal for teens to occasionally act impulsively or behave in ways that may seem out of character. At times, emotions can feel intensely overwhelming, and it may seem like they take over. It's also common for teens to feel anxious about social situations, which can be overwhelming.

That said, it’s super important to recognize the difference between the usual teenage mood swings and signs that might suggest a mental health condition, like BPD. Take a moment to go through the questions below. They can help you assess whether your daughter may be facing some challenges related to Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). If you find that some of these questions resonate with you, it might be a good idea to consider seeking some extra support for her.

WONDERING IF YOUR DAUGHTER MIGHT HAVE BORDERLINE PERSONALITY DISORDER?

  • Does your teen sometimes feel "bad" or "upset" without knowing why?

  • Does your teen seem as though they are on an emotional roller coaster, with little control over extreme emotions?

  • Do your teen'’ emotions often get the best of them, leading them to do something they later regret?

  • Does your teen tend to judge him/herself or make statements about disliking him/herself?

  • Does your teen tend to dwell on the negative?

  • Does your teen try to avoid feelings by shutting down?

  • Does your teen engage in self-destructive behaviors (like self-harm)?

  • Does your teen tend to prioritize others' needs and happiness over their own?

  • Do they tend to struggle socially - becoming friends with others who don't treat them fairly, or having very intense relationships quickly?

  • Do they feel alone and/or misunderstood?

  • Do they tend to worry excessively?

  • Do they tend to struggle with standing up for themselves and being assertive?

  • Do they seem anxious, either caused by a specific trigger or for seemingly no reason?

  • Are they struggling with communication with family, peers, teachers?

  • Do they feel hopeless or unsure of whether things can improve?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is the gold standard treatment to support teens dealing with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). It helps them navigate those intense emotions, find healthier ways to cope, and build better relationships with others. DBT is all about teaching valuable skills like mindfulness, managing emotions, connecting with people effectively, and handling distress.

Despite its daunting nature, BPD is recognized as one of the most treatable major mental health conditions, with teens who engage in psychotherapy often able to lead fulfilling and productive lives. Early intervention is crucial, as initiating treatment sooner significantly enhances the likelihood of recovery. According to a longitudinal study at McLean, they found that “100% of the people in our study achieved remission, and 77% achieved a 12-year remission.” Additionally they state. BPD is a “highly treatable condition, and the treatment is psychotherapy, not medications.” (https://www.mcleanhospital.org/news/highly-treatable-lessons-learned-decades-long-borderline-personality-disorder-study)

As a DBT-trained therapist specializing in working with teenage girls, particularly those diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), I have witnessed firsthand the transformative impact of Dialectical Behavior Therapy on both the girls and their families. The skills and strategies learned through DBT provide these young women with crucial tools for helping them navigate the tumultuous landscape of adolescence with greater confidence and resilience. Families also experience tremendous relief as they gain insight and techniques to support their daughters better, fostering healthier communication and deeper connections. Together, we cultivate a collaborative environment where healing and growth can flourish, ultimately empowering these girls to embrace their individuality and thrive.
